Organization To Dedicate Statue To The Late Nina Simone
An organization dedicated to the memory of Nina Simone is unveiling a statue of the legendary singer later this month. Jazztimes.com reports that The Eunice Waymon-Nina Simone Memorial Project will erect a larger-than-life bronze sculpture of Simone in her hometown of Tyron, North Carolina. Sculptor Zenos Frudakis created the eight-foot-tall structure which will be unveiled on February 21st, the date that would have marked Simone's 77th birthday. The work of public art will reside at Tyron's downtown district -- called Nina Simone Plaza.
Simone died on April 21st, 2003. During her extensive career, she recorded iconic renditions of "I Put a Spell on You" and "Feeling Good." |
