Republican Caging Effort In Full Swing By: Carol Dunn |
| |
If you’ve been paying even a little attention to the news coming out of the “purple” States, then you’ve probably heard the countless number of testimonials from Democrats and Independents who are claiming that they are receiving absentee ballot applications from the McCain campaign.
The question becomes, why would the McCain campaign be sending these applications to people who in no way will vote for McCain? The answer is simple and sinister and says all anyone needs to know about the ethics of John McCain.
It’s called caging and it was done by Republicans very effectively in 2000 and 2004 and it works like this: the campaign sends registered mail to a member of the opposition party. The mail is marked that it is not to be forwarded. When that mail is returned as undeliverable, it permits that party to claim that the voter is not legally able to vote and that voter is eliminated from the voter rolls.
A huge number of these letters were mailed to members of the military serving in Iraq in 2004. Because the service people were in Iraq, not at home, when those registered letters were returned as undeliverable (obviously because the service person was in Iraq) their votes were thrown out as questionable.
And now the McCain campaign is using the same tactic in all the States where the polls are showing a close race. Their hope is to disqualify enough voters who intend to vote for Obama, to just slide McCain into office.
It’s disgusting, anti-democratic and the McCain campaign is mailing out the letters in record numbers. It is also proof positive that Republicans don’t believe they can win this election on the strength of their ideas. They know that if they’re going to win, they have to eliminate as many Obama voters from the voter rolls as possible.
McCain is saying that he is going to change Washington, the question now is, change it into what? Are these the actions of someone who wants to bring ethical reform? Are these the actions of someone who wants to put America first? Are these the kind of actions you want in our next President?
