Moore in the Garden

Denver  Botanic Gardens will soon host its most significant exhibit to date: a landmark exhibition of monumental works by the internationally acclaimed sculptor Henry Moore (1898-1986). This exhibition, recently named by Time magazine as one of the Top 10 museum exhibits of 2008, comes to the Gardens March 8, 2010 – Jan. 31, 2011.

“Denver Botanic Gardens offers a unique opportunity to site Moore’s work in a diverse array of landscape – from prairie wildflowers and serene reflecting pools to cacti or the rugged alpine rock garden,” said Anita Feldman, curator at the Henry Moore Foundation. “This will be the first major open-air Moore exhibition in the Western United States and we are very pleased to be able to present it in Denver.”

This powerful show, supported by a significant lead gift from the Boettcher Foundation, highlights the inspiration Moore found in the natural environment and the pleasure he derived from seeing his works in a landscape setting. Nature, with its space and changing natural light, emphasized for him the enduring and harmonious relationship of humanity to the natural world, one of the fundamentals of his sculpture.

“Sculpture is an art of the open air. Daylight, sunlight, is necessary to it, and for me its best setting and complement is nature. I would rather have a piece of my sculpture put in a landscape, almost any landscape, than in, or on, the most beautiful building I know,” Moore stated in 1951.

Moore is generally acknowledged as one of the most important British sculptors of the 20th century. Throughout his career, he focused on the human figure while drawing inspiration from a variety of cultural traditions including African, pre-Columbian and Oceania.

Moore’s large-scale sculptures will be on display in natural outdoor settings at both the Gardens’ York Street and Chatfield locations – both perfect arenas for works that break the confines of the traditional gallery space and demand to be seen in the open.

“We are thrilled with the opportunity to host such a significant exhibition,” said Gardens CEO Brian Vogt. “Moore was not only one of the 20th century's greatest artists but he also took his inspiration from nature. The unique landscape of Denver Botanic Gardens provides a perfect backdrop for his work.”

Visitors will have the opportunity to witness Moore’s works from season to season, from the vibrant colors of spring to the cool light of winter.

An indoor exhibition at York Street in the El Pomar Room will feature a selection of Henry Moore maquettes, found objects and studio tools. These small models were preparatory pieces that led to their large-scale counterparts. Learn about Moore’s process of creating monumental sculptures while you dig deeper into his ideas and methods.

A wide variety of adult and youth programming support the exhibition. Join us for expert lectures and tours, engaging collaborations with partner institutions and interactive cell phone activities.

Adult group tours highlighting the Moore sculptures and the Gardens are available upon request with a minimum of ten people in a group (fees apply). E-mail tours@botanicgardens.org or call 720-865-3539 to make reservations, at least three weeks in advance. Free tours on the weekends are included with general admission, based on tour guide availability.

Organized by Denver Botanic Gardens in collaboration with The Henry Moore Foundation.
