At Your Desk: Ways To Exercise By: Amy Vedder |
| |
Many of us have jobs that require us to sit at a desk a day long. The problem with that is that it means that many of us aren’t getting the exercise during the day we need to keep healthy and feeling great. The way most people deal with this is by trying to fit in workouts before and after they go to work. The problem is that our days have become so busy that most of us just don’t get the time to exercise after we have finished all we have to do in a day.
One of the ways to beat this is by exercising at your desk during the workday. No I’m not suggesting that you randomly drop to the floor and do pushups (although that would be great) but I am suggesting that you integrate some great, subtle exercises that can be done without taking attention away from your work or from drawing attention from your co-workers.
Consider some of the following and see if you can’t find a way to work them into your workday:
• Stretching. Whether you stand up or sit down, stretching throughout the day is an absolute necessity. Every hour, take two minutes and stretch your arms and legs. If you can stand, stand up and stretch out your back, forward, back and to the left and right.
• Weight Lifting with no weights. Another great idea is to mimic the movements you use when lifting weights. Run through the same routine you would do with weights at the gym, only do them at your desk without any weights. Arm curls, dead lifts, etc… Because you actually aren’t holding weights it’s important to do the movements slowly and accurately to get the most out of them, but mimicking these movements throughout your day will be way more effective than you think.
• Leg Lifts. Just because you are sitting doesn’t mean you can’t get a great leg workout. Try holding your legs out straight in front of you, holding them for as long as you can. Do each leg individually and both at the same time. It’s a great leg workout and it’s an easy thing to do while sitting at your desk.
Getting the exercise you need to stay healthy isn’t easy, but by trying to do what you can when you can while you sit at your desk at work will really pay off. Now exercising at your desk doesn’t replace the need for a full fledged exercise routine, but it will stand in on those days where exercising just doesn’t fit into the schedule.
